The Enchantment of Everyday Living

Before we go much further in this blog series on accessing our inner and outer Enchanted Oasis, I want to offer a few disclaimers:

  • The word Enchantment can be off-putting to some people.  There are many people who fear anything that has an element of magic to it.  My belief  is that enchantment is like the goat in this picture – natural. I suspect  prohibitions against magical or intuitive ways go back to times when “magic” was used against people in manipulative ways by priests or shamans. Or healers with superstitious or evolving medical practices ended up doing things that were hurtful instead of helpful.  This negative type of magic is NOT the kind of enchantment that I am talking about..
  • My idea of enchantment is to work with and expand the natural energy within each of us and outside of our selves to create results in our lives that feel magical or enchanted.
  • Also before going further in talking about accessing our inner and outer enchanted oasis, I want to be clear that I don’t consider myself to be a spiritual sage or saint, or to be fully awakened to the God-consciousness within.  I am on a journey of spiritual growth and expansion as much as anyone else.
  • My views are meant to stimulate your own discernment and spirit, not to dictate any particular path for you.

Our Energy

You may not think about this often, but everyone creates an energetic transmission with their words, presence and actions.  It’s up to each of us to choose to open up to and create an enchanting presence with our life.

My chosen spiritual task this summer is to increase the connection with my own enchanting energy and increase the amount of enchantment in the world.  I’m hoping that some of you will also work to increase your level of enchanted living for your own sake and for the sake of our world.

Our Time in History

We are living through times when perhaps being frugal or constricted is going to be more valued for a while.  That doesn’t mean that we have to give up enchantment,  perhaps quite the contrary. In the next week, I’ll be sharing about the ways in which we create enchantment through our everyday choices of where we live, how we live, what we eat, what types of clothes we wear, who we spend our time with, and connecting with the spirit of the earth.

Yesterday, I asked you how it is that you stay connected with the Enchanted Oasis inside of you.

For this weekend, I ask you:

How could you increase the level of enchantment in your life over the next two months, between now and the next season?

I ask this question to prepare you for the months ahead.

My intuition says that the intensity of life is going to increase in a new direction by October of this year.  Some of that intensity is normal seasonal change. Beyond that, if you’re quiet within yourself now and the next few months, you can feel an energy building up.

We see it reflected in global economic challenges, climate change, growing gaps between the rich and poor, and so many other outer trends.  If you’re astrologically inclined, there are major alignments shifting between now and October.  We’re moving into a very intense time for most people.

It’s best to be shifting yourself now, before this more intense time hits.

That’s part of the reason that I’m writing about enchantment.  To live an enchanted life, does not mean that everything goes the way you had planned.  With a focus on looking for creating enchantment, you make your life and that of those around you easier.

So, again, I suggest today and this weekend think about how you might increase the enchantment in your life, because the changes you make now could make the rest of the year a one of dazzling intensity versus one of overwhelming intensity.

Are any of you feeling this same rising wave of intensity coming?  Just curious.

What is the Enchanted Oasis?

Both quiet and silence are aids to enchantment, because they allow us to hear the “chant” of nature, the sounds of our interior lives, and music.  The incessant and inescapable noise of modern life, standing in the way of an aural relationship with nature and making it nearly impossible to hear our thoughts, blocks enchantment.  To be susceptible to the spells of everyday life, we have at least to perceive nature, both inner and outer.

Thomas Moore, The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life

Yesterday, I invited you to take a journey of inner and outer exploration of our spiritual source in these white hot, thirsty days.  You may live on the other half of the world where it is cooler, perhaps cold and blustery now.  Some of us in the Northern hemisphere would love a blast of that cold!

Perhaps, in some way, the earth is sending us a message.  Many of us believe that the earth and all of nature would like us humans to embrace a more enchanting way of life.

The metaphor of the Enchanted Oasis is not a particularly new one.  It is one as ancient as human history and appeals to many of us, because no matter what time or climate we live in, we experience times in our life that feel like we are walking alone in a desert, searching for something magical to ease the burden of life. There are times in our life when we feel that the world has lost its enchantment.

In its biggest view,  the Enchanted Oasis is a metaphor for the spiritual center that we all have, whether we recognize it or not.  The Enchanted Oasis is NOT the entirety of our soul, it is the mysterious energetic diamond within each of us that allows us to be able to live joyfully on a constant basis, not just when we have peak experiences in life.

Often, we try to create an enchanted life by looking outwards and seeking to improve ourselves to be more appealing to our family, beloved, culture or world.  We believe that if we become:

  • Rich
  • Thin
  • Assertive
  • Muscular
  • Famous
  • Brilliant
  • Self-sacrificing
  • Highly Accomplished
  • Perfected

then, we believe we will deserve to live joyfully and create a more enchanted life.

Most of us have discovered if we are honest with ourselves, that transformations for external reasons don’t really work if we are not also connected to our own spiritual center.

On top of that, much of the time, when we hear the process of Awakening discussed, it is made to sound like an arduous journey that can only be accomplished through years of meditation, contemplation, celibacy, public service, and contribution to others.

Sometimes we have to be willing to look deeper into the enchanted world in which we live.

Have you ever noticed that there are people who the outer world would consider to be failures or at least not very successful who have a greater spiritual presence than many so-called spiritual people? These enchanted folk might wear unfashionable clothing, struggle to survive, be unhealthy or sick, have no great ambitions.  Outcasts.  Anonymous souls who will never be known in the greater world.  Yet . . . because they are connected to their own Enchanted Oasis, they are a greater force for good in this world than many of us who seem to have everything.

I’m certainly not advocating that we all become poor and struggle or choose to define personal and global prosperity as a bad goal.   It’s just that the Enchanted Oasis within and without does not require any of this.

This is what Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu and so many others were trying to help us see. We can tap into our Enchanted Oasis today and everyday, and there is no hierarchy of who deserves this gift.

As we begin this journey together, I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  1. Do you believe that each of us contains a compassionate, life nourishing spiritual center, an Enchanted Oasis within us?
  2. Do you have practices that allow you to maintain joy despite whatever outer events are happening in your life?
  3. Would you like your life to be more enchanting?
  4. Are you living out of the Enchanted Oasis within you?

I suspect that many of you are already living out of your Enchanted Oasis, but you might not have thought much about it in those terms.  Let me honor you for being and creating an Enchanted Oasis in your part of the world.

Hope you are having an absolutely enchanting day!

Your Enchanted Oasis

For some time during this summer of 2012, I’d like to share some ideas on what it means to discover and create the Enchanted Oasis within ourselves.

This theme and the following poem is in part inspired by the sweltering heat enfolding much of the United States and in part by the beautiful poetry of awakening by the Sufi Mystic Rumi.

I begin with a poem of invitation from my Enchanted Oasis to yours:

The Enchanted Oasis

Come to a place

You Know is Waiting for You

A place where you choose

the questions of your life,

guarding those diamonds,

bright as guiding stars,

in the dark night of the crimson desert

of your own making.

love

You may be parched,

slaked with thirst,

Dying for a drop of refreshment,

from a Long Journey.

love

You may be overburdened,

carrying a load too great and mighty,

for your delicate gentle shoulders

to Endure a Moment longer.

love

You may be swift and sure,

speeding along on a black stallion,

through the tall dunes of the tawny desert

with the ease of a Master.

love

You may be a light as powerful as the sun,

wandering through the delights of life,

a living expression of the Enchanted Oasis,

in your every word and deed.

love

It matters not.

love

At the Enchanted Oasis

All are welcome.

love

All Travellers

have a place at the table

the feast of Awakening.

Get in the Swing

If you’re wondering what to do this summer . . .

Maybe it’s time to simply get in a swing and be a kid again if only for a few minutes.

Give yourself permission to swing back and forth in your:

  • Opinions
  • Beliefs
  • Moods
  • Ideas about how life should be

Just swing and feel the joy of swinging!

And then maybe write down how it feels to be alive in these special times or another time when you had the freedom to swing with abandon.

Today’s Solstice – A Mirror for the Great Global Reversal Now Underway

Happy Solstice!

It’s been a while since I’ve shared my perceptions of transformative energies that are sweeping through the world.  This is a longer post for those of you who are inclined to read this.

Tapping Into Your Own Energy Today

If you would like a Solstice meditation to uplift your energy, check out Ken Stone at solsticeforyoursoul.com.  I always find his guided meditations leave me feeling blissed out.  I listened to this meditation earlier today, and think it could help you align your energy with the reversals that are coming.

A Time for Personal Strength

Today is the Solstice, a day when energies around the world mirror our yearly transition of the orbit of the earth around the sun.

This is also a day when if we are listening through our soul’s antenna,  destiny is calling all of us who are alive in these days of tremendous change.

As we move through these dramatic times,  compassion and caring are the most important strengths we can develop.  Today is a good day to align yourself with those aspects of yourself.

Trend Reversal

Practically speaking, the Solstice is always a day when seasonal trends reverse:

If you’re in the northern hemisphere, this is the longest day of the year. The days will get shorter until December 21st.

And if in the southern hemisphere, this is the shortest day of the year for you, and the days are now about to get longer.

We Are in the Midst of a Bigger Shift

The days we are living through contain profound energies and opportunities for positive change that are beneficial for you, especially when you don’t resist the change.

We are in the middle of a huge collective reversal that is changing belief sets that have been in existence for thousands of years.

Not everyone likes this reversal. In fact, you might not like it, because it is so deeply ingrained in our belief sets.

Because the belief that is being reversed is the idea that mono-cultures are good for us.

This doesn’t mean there is no room for tribes or homogeneity. There is something in human nature that likes to be surrounded by people who are like us.  In the book, Thrive by  Dan Buettner points to cultures and people who seem happier when they share a certain amount of similarity.

Yet on the whole, if my logic and intuition are correct:

We are moving into a long period of time (millennia) when diversity is cherished across the earth.

Humans have lived in a world where for thousands of years, different cultures have insisted on and often gone on to create gruesome wars in order to protect a single idea, religion, culture or world view.  Humanity on the whole has sought to drive out wildness and diversity and dissent.

We did this because it seemed safer for humanity to do so.

Collectively, we destroyed forests across the world, limited the number of species of preferred animals and food, and societal structures.

It may be that we had to go through these changes to survive as a species and evolve our consciousness.

In modern times, we see the drive for monoculture as an underlying goal in most corporations.  The underlying goal for most capitalist companies is to create products and services in such a way that monopolies are created and profits are maximized.  This is such a prevalent idea, that we don’t always see it, especially if the monopoly is led by a charismatic leader such as a Steve Jobs.

In agriculture, we collectively created a world where mono-cultures of food crops now dominate the world. For many in the world, there is only one true religion, the one they are following.

Developing Your Individuality

An interconnected world and human consciousness is changing all of this.  And I would contend that the divine Spirit that connects us all together is also letting us know that it favors this change and loves diversity.

In individuals, we have sometimes honored versatility.  I’ve always liked to read about Sir Isaac Newton because he was a scientist, astrologer and a devout man.  In his time, you could be them all.  Same with Leonardo Da Vinci.  But if you were a woman with that same combination of interests in those days, God help you! You were much more likely to be burnt at the stake for being a heretic than become renowned for your versatility.

We are moving into a new time, when diversity will be appreciated much more than mono-culture.  That means a culture of men and women working together is the one that will flourish. We need a vast collection of opinions, ideas, religious beliefs, plants, organic foods, cultures to help the world make a quantum leap into a more just, prosperous and peaceful world.

At the same time that differences can be celebrated, we are all connected by a common humanity, whether we like it or not.  Many of us also believe we are connected with all of life energetically, including stones, trees, mountains, oceans and other worlds, and they are trying to get through to us.

What does this all mean for you?

It means that being unique is already starting to be valued more than fitting in.  If you look at the situation in our global economy with an open mind, you can see that the collective whole needs us to express our unique perspective and talents.

On a more psychic note, today’s Solstice is carrying powerful energies to help you to reverse the trends of your life.

  • If you have been unhealthy much of your life, you can find healing and health in the months and years ahead.
  • If you have tried too much to fit in, opportunities will arise for you to stand out, more quickly, the more authentic you are.
  • If you have been working alone for too long, you will find your tribe to support you.
  • If you have been overwhelmed by the needs of others, you will have time for your needs to now be met.

The reversal you will see is as individual as you are.

The end result is the same however.  By being your unique self to your best ability, you will feel more connected to everyone and everything on this planet more than you ever have before.

Enjoy this Solstice.  Some people like to make a wish today.  You might enjoy writing your destiny between now and the December solstice to be a witness to what changes in your life.  I believe you will see some very positive reversals in your life.

Energy Booster for Writers

This is the final post in my current series of blogs about taking the brakes off of your personal energy and innate goodness.

Today, I am sharing ideas about why it matters for writers to understand our personal energy, and to be aware of the type of energy that we’re putting into our writing.

Nowadays, most of us are bombarded with information and writing that is packed with different kinds of energy.

Some communications are uplifting, funny and inspiring.  Others are angry, demeaning, fearful.  Of course, many pieces of writing are boring because the energy of emotion is not present in them at all!

Your writing has an energy to it that often reflects the kind of day that you’re having.  This doesn’t mean you should only write when your energy is “good”. Sometimes, the “negative” energy is just what a story needs to create drama and interest.  So, it’s not necessary that your energy becomes all sunshine and roses.  However, it’s helpful to track your energy over the course of time to notice how the type of energy you are experiencing and creating affects your writing.

The Energy Boosters for Writers worksheet is something I’m putting together for my 7 Elixirs class for Writers that I’ll going to be offering this fall in the Chicago area.  It’s based on the writing coaching work that I’ve done in the last few years.

I’ve noticed that finishing projects often requires that we manage our energy for the toughest part of writing which is when we are refining our work.  This is the time when we throw out good and sometimes great ideas for the sake of a story or grant application or marketing brochure or memoir.

This worksheet may not make complete sense, because it’s out of context to the rest of the course that I’ll be giving.  Yet, I’m sharing it anyway because it’s rather self-explanatory, and shows you a different way of managing your time and energy in conjunction with your writing.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this series of blogs!  Tomorrow, we’ll be back to some literary musings.

Awakening Your Natural Goodness

Hopetoun Falls, Otway National Park, Victoria,...On Sunday, I suggested an exercise for anyone who wanted to release the brakes on their energy.

Today, I wanted to go a little further with that idea through a writing exercise that helps you to get in touch with your own natural goodness and allow it to flow through your life.

There are many ways to feel the goodness of your natural energy such as meditation, yoga, and exercise. These are important physical ways of feeling your energy without the interference of our mind.

Sometimes, however, it’s good to engage our mind so that we can strengthen our intellectual and intuitive powers of our energy.  So, today, I’m sharing a process and worksheet to help you open up to your natural goodness with the power of your mind and intuition.

It would help if you did Sunday’s exercise, but it’s not necessary to use this process.

The main benefit of this process is to discover and prioritize the most important longer term soul projects that are doing.  It’s quite possible that you are already doing soul “work”, but this exercise also helps reinforce that understanding or broaden it.

Like Sunday’s exercise, this can be done as quickly or carefully as you want to do it.  Here is a worksheet you can download and print out to make this easier:

Natural Goodness Worksheet

Here’s the steps:

  1. Using information from your worksheet from Sunday or your own personal knowledge, write down the top 3-7 qualities of your higher self or your natural energy in column one of the worksheet.
  2. In column two, write a list of between 10 and 20 skills and strengths you have or would like to have.
  3. Column three is where some brainstorming work comes through combining the words in column one with column two. For instance, if a quality of your natural energy is compassion, and one of your strengths or talents is writing — that combines to writing with compassion or compassionate writing.

The point of this exercise is to see how you could or are already applying your best personal energies to your actions in the world.  Creating as many options as possible can make this easier.  I usually like to do this with a group of people because it tends to free people up with their ideas, but you doing this by yourself gives you more time to ponder the possibilities.

At the bottom of the natural goodness worksheet is an opportunity to look at your longer term projects or create new ones from column 3.

Hope you enjoy this exercise!
