As I was working on my writing today, I came across this great quote from the Dalai Lama:
“We humans have existed in our present form for about a hundred thousand years. I believe that if during this time the human mind had been primarily controlled by anger and hatred, our overall population would have decreased. But today, despite all our wars, we find that the human population is greater than ever. This clearly indicates to me that love and compassion predominated in the world. And this is why unpleasant events are “news”; compassionate activities are so much a part of daily life that they are taken for granted and, therefore, largely ignored.”
Personally, I believe he is on to something. My belief in the love and compassion within the vast majority of humans gives me hope that as time goes on we will find better ways to live with each other and the earth.
Both quiet and silence are aids to enchantment, because they allow us to hear the “chant” of nature, the sounds of our interior lives, and music. The incessant and inescapable noise of modern life, standing in the way of an aural relationship with nature and making it nearly impossible to hear our thoughts, blocks enchantment. To be susceptible to the spells of everyday life, we have at least to perceive nature, both inner and outer.
Thomas Moore, The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life
Yesterday, I invited you to take a journey of inner and outer exploration of our spiritual source in these white hot, thirsty days. You may live on the other half of the world where it is cooler, perhaps cold and blustery now. Some of us in the Northern hemisphere would love a blast of that cold!
Perhaps, in some way, the earth is sending us a message. Many of us believe that the earth and all of nature would like us humans to embrace a more enchanting way of life.
The metaphor of the Enchanted Oasis is not a particularly new one. It is one as ancient as human history and appeals to many of us, because no matter what time or climate we live in, we experience times in our life that feel like we are walking alone in a desert, searching for something magical to ease the burden of life. There are times in our life when we feel that the world has lost its enchantment.
In its biggest view, the Enchanted Oasis is a metaphor for the spiritual center that we all have, whether we recognize it or not. The Enchanted Oasis is NOT the entirety of our soul, it is the mysterious energetic diamond within each of us that allows us to be able to live joyfully on a constant basis, not just when we have peak experiences in life.
Often, we try to create an enchanted life by looking outwards and seeking to improve ourselves to be more appealing to our family, beloved, culture or world. We believe that if we become:
then, we believe we will deserve to live joyfully and create a more enchanted life.
Most of us have discovered if we are honest with ourselves, that transformations for external reasons don’t really work if we are not also connected to our own spiritual center.
On top of that, much of the time, when we hear the process of Awakening discussed, it is made to sound like an arduous journey that can only be accomplished through years of meditation, contemplation, celibacy, public service, and contribution to others.
Sometimes we have to be willing to look deeper into the enchanted world in which we live.
Have you ever noticed that there are people who the outer world would consider to be failures or at least not very successful who have a greater spiritual presence than many so-called spiritual people? These enchanted folk might wear unfashionable clothing, struggle to survive, be unhealthy or sick, have no great ambitions. Outcasts. Anonymous souls who will never be known in the greater world. Yet . . . because they are connected to their own Enchanted Oasis, they are a greater force for good in this world than many of us who seem to have everything.
I’m certainly not advocating that we all become poor and struggle or choose to define personal and global prosperity as a bad goal. It’s just that the Enchanted Oasis within and without does not require any of this.
This is what Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu and so many others were trying to help us see. We can tap into our Enchanted Oasis today and everyday, and there is no hierarchy of who deserves this gift.
As we begin this journey together, I’d love to hear your thoughts:
Do you believe that each of us contains a compassionate, life nourishing spiritual center, an Enchanted Oasis within us?
Do you have practices that allow you to maintain joy despite whatever outer events are happening in your life?
Would you like your life to be more enchanting?
Are you living out of the Enchanted Oasis within you?
I suspect that many of you are already living out of your Enchanted Oasis, but you might not have thought much about it in those terms. Let me honor you for being and creating an Enchanted Oasis in your part of the world.
It’s been a while since I’ve shared my perceptions of transformative energies that are sweeping through the world. This is a longer post for those of you who are inclined to read this.
Tapping Into Your Own Energy Today
If you would like a Solstice meditation to uplift your energy, check out Ken Stone at solsticeforyoursoul.com. I always find his guided meditations leave me feeling blissed out. I listened to this meditation earlier today, and think it could help you align your energy with the reversals that are coming.
A Time for Personal Strength
Today is the Solstice, a day when energies around the world mirror our yearly transition of the orbit of the earth around the sun.
This is also a day when if we are listening through our soul’s antenna, destiny is calling all of us who are alive in these days of tremendous change.
As we move through these dramatic times, compassion and caring are the most important strengths we can develop. Today is a good day to align yourself with those aspects of yourself.
Practically speaking, the Solstice is always a day when seasonal trends reverse:
If you’re in the northern hemisphere, this is the longest day of the year. The days will get shorter until December 21st.
And if in the southern hemisphere, this is the shortest day of the year for you, and the days are now about to get longer.
We Are in the Midst of a Bigger Shift
The days we are living through contain profound energies and opportunities for positive change that are beneficial for you, especially when you don’t resist the change.
We are in the middle of a huge collective reversal that is changing belief sets that have been in existence for thousands of years.
Not everyone likes this reversal. In fact, you might not like it, because it is so deeply ingrained in our belief sets.
Because the belief that is being reversed is the idea that mono-cultures are good for us.
This doesn’t mean there is no room for tribes or homogeneity. There is something in human nature that likes to be surrounded by people who are like us. In the book, Thrive by Dan Buettner points to cultures and people who seem happier when they share a certain amount of similarity.
Yet on the whole, if my logic and intuition are correct:
We are moving into a long period of time (millennia) when diversity is cherished across the earth.
Humans have lived in a world where for thousands of years, different cultures have insisted on and often gone on to create gruesome wars in order to protect a single idea, religion, culture or world view. Humanity on the whole has sought to drive out wildness and diversity and dissent.
We did this because it seemed safer for humanity to do so.
Collectively, we destroyed forests across the world, limited the number of species of preferred animals and food, and societal structures.
It may be that we had to go through these changes to survive as a species and evolve our consciousness.
In modern times, we see the drive for monoculture as an underlying goal in most corporations. The underlying goal for most capitalist companies is to create products and services in such a way that monopolies are created and profits are maximized. This is such a prevalent idea, that we don’t always see it, especially if the monopoly is led by a charismatic leader such as a Steve Jobs.
In agriculture, we collectively created a world where mono-cultures of food crops now dominate the world. For many in the world, there is only one true religion, the one they are following.
Developing Your Individuality
An interconnected world and human consciousness is changing all of this. And I would contend that the divine Spirit that connects us all together is also letting us know that it favors this change and loves diversity.
In individuals, we have sometimes honored versatility. I’ve always liked to read about Sir Isaac Newton because he was a scientist, astrologer and a devout man. In his time, you could be them all. Same with Leonardo Da Vinci. But if you were a woman with that same combination of interests in those days, God help you! You were much more likely to be burnt at the stake for being a heretic than become renowned for your versatility.
We are moving into a new time, when diversity will be appreciated much more than mono-culture. That means a culture of men and women working together is the one that will flourish. We need a vast collection of opinions, ideas, religious beliefs, plants, organic foods, cultures to help the world make a quantum leap into a more just, prosperous and peaceful world.
At the same time that differences can be celebrated, we are all connected by a common humanity, whether we like it or not. Many of us also believe we are connected with all of life energetically, including stones, trees, mountains, oceans and other worlds, and they are trying to get through to us.
What does this all mean for you?
It means that being unique is already starting to be valued more than fitting in. If you look at the situation in our global economy with an open mind, you can see that the collective whole needs us to express our unique perspective and talents.
On a more psychic note, today’s Solstice is carrying powerful energies to help you to reverse the trends of your life.
If you have been unhealthy much of your life, you can find healing and health in the months and years ahead.
If you have tried too much to fit in, opportunities will arise for you to stand out, more quickly, the more authentic you are.
If you have been working alone for too long, you will find your tribe to support you.
If you have been overwhelmed by the needs of others, you will have time for your needs to now be met.
The reversal you will see is as individual as you are.
The end result is the same however. By being your unique self to your best ability, you will feel more connected to everyone and everything on this planet more than you ever have before.
Enjoy this Solstice. Some people like to make a wish today. You might enjoy writing your destiny between now and the December solstice to be a witness to what changes in your life. I believe you will see some very positive reversals in your life.
I once had a teacher who taught that each person would be wise to work towards becoming a Master of their own life. To do this, she said we need to learn how to serve others.
There all kinds of masters. We can become masters of our craft or career. Some people are the master of their family. Others master their time on earth.
If all masters served their students or followers or a higher good, I would find the term master to be something to seek after. Unfortunately, being a master has often provided opportunities for abusing power over others. I tend to associate with patriarchal power used against the defenseless.
Yet, there is something about becoming a master of our own destiny that is an inherent aspect of not only American culture but personal development. The type of master that has most appealed to me in recent years is becoming a spiritual master. I have seen glimpses of the one reality that underpins all of life during my spiritual questing in the last few years. There were even times when I have been able to hold on to states of bliss for months on end. However, attaining bliss is not a form of spiritual mastery that satisfies me when so much of humanity deserves to be able to live in states of greater security, balance and comfort.
It bothers me that the technology and skill to feed everyone on the planet exists, yet I’m not sure what I could do to help that process. The earth is the home to billions of people who if we could work together could create paradise on earth. Instead, most of us stay stuck living the same old materialist life.
It’s not so much that there are a few people who are truly evil that are making the rest of us suffer. It seems to me that the problem lies in the challenge that we don’t know how to master collaborative living.
In America, we have a country of basically good people in America who can’t come to agreement on how to move into the future, even though we all know the visions for the next era of human growth cannot be the same as the last era that brought us to this stage of our development. It’s not just the top 1% of America that is clinging to a materialist way of life, it’s much of our society.
My sense is that the earth and nature want to teach us a new way of being a master, and for the next few days I’ll share some ideas about the era of learning self-mastery in partnership with nature, as well as the idea of collaborative mastery without all of us becoming borgs or robots.I sincerely hope that North America can take the lead in a new kind of personal and group mastery.
We have the resources to do this if we can find the will and wisdom!
